Justice for Deborah Yakubu: A Female College Student Lynched By A Muslim Mob In Sokoto, Nigeria

Deborah Yakubu
Nigeria failed you, Deborah Yakubu. The rest of the world will not be silent. Those who stoned you to death and burned your body yesterday at the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto, where you were studying to serve Nigeria as an educator, must be brought to justice.

On this incident, we refuse to be neutral and silent.

The worst crime against a person has happened before our eyes, and many do not know about it. Those who have heard are either confused or silent. No. Silence is complicity. We can’t swallow this and pretend as if nothing has happened in Nigeria. The news about this lynching should cause a global outrage, and we must be on the streets protesting and demanding justice for Deborah Yakubu.

Filled with outrage, we created a Facebook Page to coordinate international activism and mobilization in honor of Ms. Deborah Yakubu, a 200 level Home Economics student, who was cruelly stoned and burned to death by Muslim extremists at the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto, Nigeria. We invite everyone to join in this effort. Share the information you have about the gruesome killing of Deborah Yakubu on this Facebook Page and show support by posting virtual lit up candles. This is an evolving situation, and we are prepared to make sure that Deborah Yakubu’s death will never be in vain. #justicefordeborahyakubu

Ms. Deborah Yakubu, a Christian lady who was an undergraduate student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto Nigeria, was first stoned, and then burned by Muslim extremists until she became ashes. Here is her sin: She wanted to focus on her school (group) assignment instead of engaging in a discussion about Prophet Muhammad and Islam. Her comment in their WhatsApp group was perceived by some of her Muslim classmates to be a blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad. And that was it. She was hunted by a group of extremist Muslim students and burned. The videos of her last moment as she was turning into ashes are disturbing, and we will not share those in order to dignify her and her gentle spirit. We are profoundly touched by this barbaric incident.
